I love hiking. For me, camping and hiking go hand and hand. What better way to enjoy the outdoors and fresh air than a vigorous hike to an amazing view!

Camping requires very little to prepare, but some of the items listed below are great additions to many hikes. Recently I did a bunch of camping and hikes - a 6 week road trip to many beautiful national parks. We would see some people in fancy gear with super expensive shoes, bought hiking poles (we thought they looked more prepared to go skiing!).
Below are hiking gifts that I don't think are superfluous, and you WILL probably find them useful.

was smaller and held ALOT of water for its size - plus a snack or two. I like a small-medium size for day hikes. Enough to carry a bunch of water, a few snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses and camera. (and attach my long-sleeve shirt on the outside elastic straps)

Perhaps you're into Geo-cache-ing? Want to do more extreme hikes and go backpacking and hike into the back woods. Beyond map and compass, these days a gps is a nice back-up. Keep in mind, that you pay for what you get, so the more money you pay, the better gps you'll get.
